What causes biomechanical abnormality of the Knee?

Common causes of biomechanical abnormality in the knee would be through damage to the structures from external forces, or through degeneration of the structures from wear and tear or disease. Poor postural habits and muscle weakness imbalance can also lead to a stretching or shortening of the ligaments and tendons within the knee. Affecting its ability to cope with static and dynamic forces. It is common to see athletes with reoccurring overuse biomechanical abnormalities, which left untreated can become chronic.

What are the symptoms of biomechanical abnormality of the Knee?

Symptoms of biomechanical abnormality within the knee would include pain during or after activities such as sports or even just walking. There could be swelling or stiffness in the joint and possible discolouration, with the area feeling hot to the touch. The symptoms can be more subtle, like the sensation of abnormal pressure, clicking or the feeling of instability in the knee joint. Excessive pronation or supination of the foot at the ankle is an abnormality that can cause pain in the foot, ankle, knee, hip or even lower back.

How is biomechanical abnormality of the Knee Diagnosed?

Our specialist physiotherapists at Liverpool Physio can carry out a comprehensive assessment to diagnose biomechanical abnormality in the knee. If you have a significant biomechanical abnormality in the knee, an MRI scan or ultrasound may be required to highlight the severity of your condition.
