Gait assessment

Physiotherapists are movement experts and as such are able to observe the way in which your body moves as you walk or run and assess for any abnormalities. Gait is your pattern of walking and this naturally varies between individuals for a wide variety of reasons.

Our specialist physiotherapists here at Liverpool Physio are able to highlight any problems you may have by observing your gait and put in place a specific treatment plan dependent upon the issues identified.

Who is suitable for gait assessment?

Gait assessment is suitable for children through to adults who suffer from pain or discomfort whether moving or resting in areas such as the back, hips and lower limbs. Gait assessment will also help identify posture-related or movement-related problems in people with injuries.

What is involved in gait assessment?

A gait assessment involves a physiotherapist observing your walking to identify any flaws in your movement pattern in comparison with normal gait. Your physiotherapist will be observing the alignment of your pelvis, hips, knees, ankles and feet from all different angles to identify any abnormalities.

Gait assessment is essential if you have any difficulties walking for an individual treatment plan in place to focus on correcting abnormalities such as posture, joint range of movement or muscle strength.

Physiotherapy treatment following a gait assessment

Physiotherapy treatment will improve your gait pattern by implementing various treatment techniques such as:
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Stretching exercises
  • Practicing gait using parallel bars
  • Using assistive devices
  • Fitting of orthotics
  • Visual and auditory activities
  • Exercises and facilitation for normal movement patterns
Physiotherapy treatment always aims to gain your maximum potential. Physiotherapy may consist of a combination of treatment techniques to facilitate your progression towards independent mobility.
