Relaxation

Massage consists of many different benefits. Relaxation plays a major part in massage therapy and is gained by using a series of different techniques.

What is massage relaxation?

Many different types of massages have an aim to relax the body and mind as a whole whilst others have an effect on the physiological systems that causes relaxation as an indirect benefit. Relaxation is an involuntary response of the nervous system which can be manipulated by the use of different massage techniques and the stimulation of the sensory responses. With the application of different types of pressures on the soft tissue structures a sense of relaxation can be felt due to the physical effects that may occur within the body as pressure is applied.

The relaxation response felt during and after a massage is due to the stimulation of the sensory feedback mechanisms which causes the breathing and heart rate to decrease which has a direct effect on the rate of blood pressure being circulated. The relaxation response will also have effect on the state of the muscles as the blood pressure decreases the muscles enter a state of relaxation as the production of hormones decreases.

Benefits of relaxation massage

Many forms of massage incorporate different techniques that have a relaxing effect on the tissues and the body as a whole. Massage is believed to improve the lymph circulation and blood supply to restricted areas. This reaction is thought to be brought on by the chemicals being released through the stimulation of touch and mechanical pressure on the tissues causing relaxation.

Different techniques enhance the rate of delivery of oxygen around the body accompanied with an increase of nutrients to the cells of the muscles. An improvement of cellular health combined with a more efficient circulatory system helps to increase the absorption of waste products and excess fluids which helps to decrease swelling.

Benefits of massage for relaxation include:-
  • Increase in blood circulation
  • Increase lymph circulation
  • Relaxes muscles
  • Normalises soft tissues
  • Increase oxygen and nutrients
  • Removal of waste products
  • Reduce nerve compression
  • Reduce stress
  • Reduce anxiety

How massage for relaxation works

The specialists apply their skills and knowledge to reach the goal of all over relaxation. The use of touch on the skin itself is a stimulant which has physical and physiological advantages related to relaxation. The soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves are stimulated so a reduction in any form of pain, stress and tension is eased and a sense of all over relaxation can be felt around the body. The nerves which may be contributing to an increase in pain and loss of function may be compressed by tension built up within the contracted muscles, through massage the muscles become elongated and more robust which helps to alleviate the symptoms of pain and a feeling of relaxation is gained.

Neurological pain pathways may be stimulated through massage causing a holistic sense of relaxation which can affect the deeper structures of the body such as the organs which may be neglected. Therefore massage can increase the sense of relaxation to every part of the human body and increase function in the process.
